How do you approach a new series?

How do you read a series? This is an age old argument between DH and I. He will find a new author he likes, and read the series, from beginning to end, and maybe even explore other works by the author when he is done. I find any series, or even stand alone works by the same author, get repetitive. I like to read the entire series (from the beginning) , but I need to break them up with a couple of books in between. I find it spreads them out, makes them last longer, and I get more enjoyment out of it. So, I guess I am performing a survey of sorts. How do you read a series, and why do you do it that way?
